The institution is a healthcare firm is engaged in the provision of anaesthesiology and surgery services in Spain. It was established in 1989 and has its registered head office located in Barcelona. The institution's main activities are organized in five functional units: Surgical, Obstetrical, Medical, Peripheral and Pain Medicine. The Surgical Functional Unit involves in attending all surgical procedures, both programmed surgery as well as emergency surgery, performed in the central operating theatres. Patient postoperative monitoring at the Recovery & Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is also part of its responsibilities. The Obstetrical Functional Unit is responsible for verifying that all preoperative tests have been performed and if they have not, to perform any required or missing preoperative tests, as established by the anaesthesiology protocol in force at the Obstetrics Unit. It also involves in obtaining the patient's Informed Consent Form (ICF), attending to the needs of the labouring woman (analgesia and medical status), basic resuscitation of the neonate, attending the patient in case a postpartum complication arises that might alter haemodynamic stability, and attending programmed surgery or emergency obstetric surgery (caesarean sections, uterine curettage, or cerclage) in the operating theatre located in this surgical area. The Medical Functional Unit includes the Reanimation Unit, the Acute Pain Unit, and the preoperative assessment in the hospitalisation wards and in consultation offices, as well as the monitoring of admitted patients under the care of the Department of Anaesthesia and Reanimation. Its responsibilities including attending the surgical patient before and after surgery, performing the preoperative examination both in the consultation offices and in hospitalisation wards, attending attend the postoperative visit of patients who have undergone surgery or have been taken back to their hospitalisation wards in order to assess their postoperative course, and attending the postoperative patient at the Recovery Room. The Peripheral Functional Unit is composed of anaesthesiologists who cover the Outpatient Surgery Centre, the Digestive Endoscopy Unit and the areas of lithotripsy and diagnostic imaging. The Pain Medicine Clinic is supervised by an anaesthesiologist specialising in pain who visits patients 1 or 2 days per week in the consultation offices (in the late afternoon), prescribing the appropriate treatment in each particular case.
