The company is primarily engaged in manufacturing products ranging from natural gas, oil, petrochemicals and innovative intermediates to high-value-added chemicals, crop protection agents and pharmaceuticals. It was set up in 1966 in the industrial area of Tarragona, where the manufacturing plants are situated. Over the years, the petrochemical complex has become one of the most important production centres for BASF Europe and the only one with an exit point on the Mediterranean coast. The company has a registered office located in Barcelona, Spain. Through the acquisition of shares in different companies and by creating new organisations, the company has consistently increased its presence in Spain in a variety of sectors within industry and agriculture. Some of the outstanding projects carried out that have marked the future development of the company's integrated production centre in Tarragona include the new Basell polypropylene plant, the BASF SONATRACH PropanChem S.A. propane dehydrogenation plant, a joint venture between the company and SONATRACH, the energy supply plant and the enlargement of the tank park at the port. The company's portfolio includes health and nutrition like pharmaceuticals (drugs for treating obesity-related disorder cardiovascular system and thyroid insufficiency); fine chemicals (vitamins, carotenoids, polymers, cosmetic industries and products for animal nutrition); and crop protection for weeds control and growth regulators. It also manufactures colourants and finishing products like dyes and chemicals for textiles and leather; dispersions like acrylic acid, raw material for paints, coatings and adhesives. Other chemicals include petrochemicals such as ethylene, propylene and benzene and inorganic basic chemicals like methanol, acetylene, ammonia, sulfuric acid and inorganic specialties; catalysts. Other products include fertilisers like straight nitrogen fertilisers, compound fertilisers of the Nitrophoska line and Compo products for plant care and industrial chemicals like plasticisers and intermediates. The company markets its extensive range of products in Spain through seven companies, six of which have their own manufacturing centers.
