Conceived as a real village, it is a selection of full-scale replicas of buildings from different parts of the Peninsula. The village was conceived for visitors to enjoy an open-air Spanish architectural museum while strolling around its squares, streets and gardens. It was built in 1929 for the Barcelona International Exhibition as the pavilion dedicated to art. The aim was to give an idea of what might be an "ideal model" of an Iberian village that would bring together all the characteristics of all peninsular villages. The village has a registered office located in Barcelona, Spain. According to the latest data of Tourism of Barcelona, it is in fourth position in the Top 10 of the most visited tourist attractions in Barcelona after the Sagrada Familia, The Aquarium and the Museum FC Barcelona. Tourists can discover the architectural diversity of Spain more than 49,000 square meters and full-scale replicas of 117 buildings. It is managed by P.E.M.S.A.U (Poble Espanyol de Montjuïc Sociedad Anónima Unipersonal) under the legal administrative concession system, in charge of its operation and management until 2036. P.E.M.S.A.U is a private capital company that manages the village under sole management criteria and with the principles of a private company. Aware that one of its management values is to conserve and improve it. Also, to have as a main objective the projection of this at all levels, including looking after the commercial interests of all the inhabitants of the site.
