This company, founded in 1976 by Antonio Asensio Pizarro, is one of Spain's largest press groups. It is engaged in the publishing and distribution of newspapers, magazines, books and other items (including one million for export mainly to Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay, Chile and Colombia.). The company has always backed popular quality newspapers and maintains a policy of expansion in this sector. Its 12 mastheads amount to a total audience of 1,800,000 readers and circulation of almost 340,000 copies throughout Spain. The group's titles are absolute audience leaders in Catalonia (El Periodico de Catalunya), Cordova (Cordoba newspaper) and Castellon (Mediterraneo). They also enjoy important presence in the remaining areas they cover: Aragon, Asturias and Estremadura. The company's magazine division has popular weekly titles such as Interviu, with 919,000 readers in Spain and sales of almost 109,000 copies and Tiempo, with 171,000 readers and sales of almost 57,000 copies. Its monthly magazines include Man, with 198,000 readers, its best readership result since 2003; Woman, one of the main high range woman's publications, with a readership of 252,000; and Viajar, the first Spanish magazine on travelling, with an average readership of 215,000 (all figures as of December 2005). The portfolio of corporate magazines was also increased with the addition of Iberia Plus, a bi-monthly magazine edited by Ediciones Reunidas for Iberia airlines and meant for members of the Iberia Plus program. The book's unit of the company is made up of the following brands: Ediciones B, Vergara, Bruguera Editorial, Zeta Bolsillo and Byblos. The books unit has a strong presence in the Spanish market and a consolidated leadership in Latin America, with subsidiaries in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela which ensures that the group is well represented in most of the American continent. In addition, the company is also an important player in radio, TV and Internet. Among its initiatives in the digital media sector are the development of local portals and web sites specializing in local services, with leisure guides, and other information relevant to specific local geographic areas.
